Day 1
Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. Genesis 1:3
It is interesting to note that God did not create the sun or moon on the first day. He created light. It may be that He created the light that radiates from His own being. And there will be no night there - no need for lamps or sun - for the Lord God will shine on them. Revelations 22:5
Light is often used in the Bible to refer to Jesus. Darkness often refers to Satan. And God saw that the light was good. Then He separated the light from the darkness. Genesis 1:4.
Day 2
Then God said, "Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth." And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. God called the space "sky." And the evening passed and morning came, marking the second day. Genesis 1:6-8
Day 3
And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plans and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning - the third day. Genesis 1:9-13.
All of this has taken place - vegetation now exists. And we still don't have the sun.
God sets limits even in nature. He said that the land would bear fruit with seed in it, according to their kind. This means that you can't plant a seed from an orange and grow a rose bush. God likes order and He put order in nature. Orange trees will bring oranges and a rose bush will bring roses.
Day 4
In the first three days of creation we read that God created three "spaces" - land, seas, and sky. In the coming days of creation, He fills them.
Then God said, "Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth." And that is what happened. God made two great lights - the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day. Genesis 1:14-19.
Before Google Earth, before the compass had been invented, before written maps, people navigated by the sky. Before clocks and calendars were invented, people kept time by the sky. People even predicted the weather according to the sky. As the old saying goes "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning."
The sun seems to have been created just as much as a time-keeping device as it is to provide us with light. Remember that light had existed for three days prior to the sun's creation. By the sun and moon we can track the passing of time.
Day 5
Then God said, "Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind." So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird - each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on earth." And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day. Genesis 1:20-23
A new element is added to God approving what he's created. This time, He blesses them. It is the first time the word "bless" appears in the Bible. See again how the animals are given limitations and order: They are allowed to reproduce of the same kind. A bird won't hatch a dolphin. These limitations create beauty.
Day 6
And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. God blessed and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground." Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground - everything that has the breath of life in it - I give every green plant for food." And it was so. God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning - the sixth day. Genesis 1:24-31
Day 7
So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. On the seventh day, having finished His task, God rested from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from His work of creation. Genesis 2:1-3.
